THROUGHOUT THIS GROUPWORK ..
Although both modules Construction Technology and Building Materials may seem like they are under the same roof, being co-related whilst having surplus similarities, both modules are actually worlds apart. From my personal understanding as a student under Taylor's Bachelors of Quantity Surveying, the module Construction Technology refers more to the ever-enhancing technology used to mold construct a building, whereas building materials can be further understood as the substances concocted together in order by technology to achieve their utmost potential in terms of the sustainability of a building.
Throughout the progression of the assignment, we have implememted the knowledge acquired from both modules with all a due. While visualising ourselves as legit consulants advising and proposing to clients with the elements needed to build their single-storey bungalow, we indulge ourselves into the world of construction. To start everything off, it's a legitimate fact that whereby a sustainably-built ecogreen houses are far more comfortable, pleasant, and last but not least healthier to live in compared to buildings that go with the regular substance built. With the presence of this groupwork, we were required to leave no stone unturned. It turns out to be that building materials that are sustainable tend to emit lesser or near zero chemicals such as carcinogens, VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds), and mold spores, which ultimately leads to better air quality inhaled by the ones staying in them. "A sustainable home is a healthy home", once quoted by freshome.com, says it all. As an example in our project, the paint jobs used in our rooms and carporches are water-based paints and acrylic emulsion paints, which are certified paints that have a low level of toxic emition.
Wood, a fairly acceptable material by most clients can be well considered as a common substance in terms enhancing the sustainability and aesthetical value of a sinlge-storey bungalow. As the material mentioned above is much sustainable and long lasting, we have implemented the usage of wood in ample of building elements. As an example, a framed wooden door for almost all our rooms and exits, wooden flooring that looks extravagant, tray ceilings with wooden finishes that increase the aesthetical value of the building and so forth.
As a conclusion, it is crucial for us as quantity surveyors to understand building materials and master it to our fingertips as it is deemed to be an essential piece of knowledge that may well draw the boundary between quality-based quantity surveyors. The types and substances used to create building materials may well be enhanced with the aid of technology, that is why we should always keep ourselves updated with the latest and greatest of information when it comes to building materials. In another set of phrases, building materials is a lifelong subject that isn't restrained to only one semester in our university life.
